Who will shoot your wedding?

When David and I got engaged, my first instinct was to elope to Vegas, get married by an Elvis impersonator, and shoot the wedding myself with a tripod and a remote. Alas, David wasn't at all interested in eloping to Vegas. During our plans for a wedding in New Orleans, the market tanked and we realized that New Orleans might be pretty rough in a year and no one, including us, might be able to afford to travel. Plan B, eloping in Key West. I knew the pictures were going to be a group effort... And David would have to take at least a few. Here is one of David's pre-wedding shots, I think he's got a future, don't you?

Deborah + Daniel

I usually try to post a set of images to my website within a few days of finishing the shoot. And in the interest of time, I usually focus on one small segment of the day. Lots of gorgeous brides and handsome grooms as usual, including my second shooter, David, and his lovely new wife Cristiana.

It's funny to see someone who you are used to shooting weddings with actually in a wedding. Christiana had one of the longest, most beautiful veils that I've ever seen. However, her attendants, both male, had a little trouble figuring out how to place it behind her once she stopped moving. I think they did a great job, don't you?

One of the things I look forward to when I finish shooting a couples weddings, is the opportunity to shoot them and their children in the future. Chuks and Shaleea, the couple whose pictures appear at the link if you click on the title, are the proud new parents of an absolutely precious son, Boston.

I loved shooting this cute new family. We had a terrific day, the location was great, and Boston was so sweet! Isn't he adorable?

During December, I had the opportunity to photograph the Four Generations of Hartfords in South Boston. There are a ton of pictures that I love, but thought these two captured the spirit pretty well!

Shortly after my last post, way back in spring 2007, Winston, the bulldog formerly known as Huskie, moved back in with me.

He's kind of huskie, super cute, and spoiled rotten. And honestly, I can't see any reason for it to be any other way, can you?

Music Festivals

Music festivals?

Yup, great opportunities to photograph really interesting emerging bands (check out zydepunks pictured above), established musicians, and a collection of other interesting goodies.

The most recent outing was Voodoo Fest. Voodoo fest X was held in a park in New Orleans in late-October. The weather was perfect, the music incredible. And I got to see Wyclef Jean who was incredible (see pix above). All the musicians were excited about the upcoming election and the crowds were equally excited. Lots of support for Obama!

Lomography II

Ahh, huh, what else?

Well in addition to the multi-shooting lomo, I have a fish eye camera that is also cheap, plastic and fun to use...

Both cameras have been on quite a few trips in the last few years usually combining a few of my favorite things to do:
1) travel
2) hear music
3) take pixs

And to do all three, I've been going to interesting music festivals including Austin City Limits, New Orleans Jazzfest, and most recently, Voodoo Fest also in New Orleans. These big music festivals are a great opportunity to check out a lot of music without a lot of commitment. More on that in the next post...

(The image above is the bike racks at Austin City Limits (ACL). An impressive turn out of car free travelers. I loved ACL, but it was hot, I mean, really, really hot!)

Ok, it's been almost two years since I've posted. I've thought about it many times, but have been too busy to post. Mea culpae!

I have posted lots of stuff online to my lomography lab, http://www.lomography.com/lab/, search for ackcoatue...

The lomography society is a community of artists who use cheap cameras, usually plastic film cameras. If you've ever seen me with a yellow square that makes a crazy kind of ticking noise, then you've seen one of my my cheap plastic cameras.

They create images like the one below. And the draw, at least for me, is that you can take them anywhere and you get a lots of interesting results. When you shoot digital and you have an endless amount of control in post-production, the appeal of something that exists on film just the way you shot it is kind of great.

Is that it you wonder? Nope, not even close... More to come!

SXSW

Greetings!

Spring is finally starting to happen around here & I'm getting excited to start shooting nuptials again. But while I've been waiting for things to warm up & engagement rings to be distributed I've been catching a lot of great new music including some great stuff recently at South By South West (SXSW) which if you're a music fan is not to be missed. I'm going to Jazzfest which I've also heard is quite cool, maybe to roots rock what SXSW is for indy rock? Any thoughts?

Yup, the web site is having a bit of an identity crisis, it's tan, it's white, it's black, it's not unlike these tasty treats below. Another cute picture from the fall photo shoots.

On the artistic, creative side, I am working on several photography projects including one of matter as non-solids - fire, steam, smoke, etc...

I am also working on a couple of sets of images using inexpensive plastic cameras. I usually have them at weddings, but rarely have a chance to use them.

Santa Claus Ball

Yup, Mr. Claus, Santa to those of you who dig goodies under a tree, was on hand at the Santa Clauss Ball sponsored by the good kids at Santa Claus Anonymous. And Coatue Photography voluntered to take pictures of the guests with Santa. Some serious, some not so serious images came of the whole thing, check out the mini gallery.

I love this shot... And I've tried to figure out a good place to use it, but somehow, I always go with something else. However, it needs to be shared, so here it is.

Where have I been?

The fall was a jam packed adventure of gorgeous brides, handsome grooms, and hours spent with the computer on my lap...

When it was all done, I took off for a little Jamaican vacation where apparently everything is No problem...

At least for us it was. Great time...

I've been booking weddings and am excited about shooting the upcoming weddings.

We shot the Santa Ball in December. Enjoyed the holidays as I hope all of you did. And now we're looking forward to updating the site. Doing some fun creative images. And seeing more of all of you.

And a lot more blogging, I've got a back log of things to share and pictures to post!

My wedding Saturday was great fun! Salem, MA in October is amazing to start with. Add a full mooon, gorgeous fall day, and Mat & Dianne who are totally loved by one another and all of their friends and family and it is the perfect gig!

Brenna, my co-shooter for the day was also amazing proving her greatness by navigating the mini through the one-way streets of Salem, MA to find the lost groom's man. Both Brenna & the groomsman made it safely to the shooot.

It's been a super busy year for Coatue so far. We've been shooting a ton and having a great time doing it!

Our next wedding is in Marblehead, MA which should be a ton of fun and online, at least in mini-gallery form by September 10th.

And we've been lucky to have such cool couples to work with! In fact, Kelly and Steve, our intrepid rock wandering newlyweds just announced the formation of their uber-hip company, Sunnyside Events. If you're looking for help with your event, drop me a line and I'll connect you with them once they return from their honeymoon!

Welcome!

I've seen a lot of colleagues create terrific blogs. At first, I thought, huh, why?

But they've grown on me. And the cool kids at Fred Miranda gave me info on making one, so ta da, here it is!

And especially when I saw the explanation behind the blog 5 peeps. The origin of 5 peeps was that the blogger had 5 people who she was sure wanted to see her work, so whenever she had anything new, she'd send it to them. They'd send it to others, or write her back or whatever, but eventually, it just made sense to create a blog.

As some of you know, I'm a big fan of sending out my most recent work to friends, relatives, and utter strangers on occasion, so I thought this might be a welcome relief for all involved.

No idea where I'm going with this, but hope it's useful for some of you.
